Character and Concept Creation is a course where creativity drives every decision, stories shape every design, and imagination is transformed into exciting characters and environments. This is an exciting new Level 2 & 3 course designed for ambitious, imaginative learners ready to explore the art of bringing ideas to life. Whether you’re inspired by film, theatre, television, games, or immersive experiences, this course empowers you with the practical skills, artistic vision, and industry awareness to design and create characters, costumes, and worlds from the ground up.
Across this programme, a mixture of research, analysis and hands-on creativity, you’ll develop a deep understanding of how culture, history, narrative, and aesthetics inform design. Through text and story analysis, you’ll learn to read beyond the page—identifying themes, symbolism, and rhythms that influence everything from costume silhouettes to colour palettes. You’ll create evocative mood boards, experiment with aesthetics, and build a strong conceptual foundation for every character and environment you design.
Your practical skills will grow rapidly as you explore anatomy, drawing, painting, draping, and sewing, gaining the essential toolkit of a costume, concept, or character designer. You’ll work with materials, and construction
processes used throughout the creative industries, and you’ll experiment with sculpting, prosthetics, and special effects makeup to transform people into fully realised characters. From subtle age makeup to bold fantasy creatures, you’ll discover how makeup, prosthetics, and costume work together to communicate personality and narratives.
The world around your characters matters too. That’s why you’ll also explore the fundamentals of set design, learning how environments tell stories just as powerfully as costumes do. You’ll experiment with storyboarding, model
making, and construction skills, developing miniatures and visual plans that bring whole scenes and spaces to life.
